Chapel Hill Courthouse Vandalized; DA’s Office Calls It ‘Despicable’ - Chapelboro.com
Ahead of a Monday hearing for the three dozen arrestees from the "Triangle Gaza Solidarity Encampment" at UNC, antifa-style leftists gathered in Chapel Hill last Saturday to march around in black bloc and vandalize the town courthouse:
The demonstration, organized by "Triangle Stop Cop City", left graffiti left on the Chapel Hill Courthouse with messages such as "Kill Cops," "Death to Cops", "Burn the Prisons," and "Jihad Now."
In response, District Attorney for Orange & Chatham Counties Jeff Nieman issued a statement expressing his support of law enforcement and denouncing the "calls for violence and murder".
UNC encampment arrestee hearing, N&O gets it wrong
According to the News & Observer, 19 out of the 39 encampment defendants have decided to go to trial after Monday's hearing, which was scheduled for a different courthouse (the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough).
However, I can offer some corrections to the N&O reporting on this hearing, as I was also present:
Pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at UNC-Chapel Hill this spring returned to court for a Monday hearing in Hillsborough.
Supporters filled five rows in Orange County District Court. The hearing was largely uneventful until a conservative political journalist used a courtroom break to take photos of the protest defendants.
The group gathered at the back of the courtroom to block the woman’s efforts, and she moved to another seat, posting the photos she obtained to X.
“I’m Jewish,” said Sloan Rachmuth, president of the Education First Alliance, when asked why she was taking photos of people in the courtroom. “I want to make sure I’m safe. I want to make sure these guys get justice.”

First of all, the defendants began paying Sloan and I "attention" when we first walked into the courthouse, before she took any pictures. I believe they either recognized us, or simply recognized by our bearing that we were not members of sympathetic media like Tammy Grubb of the N&O.
Secondly, I didn't see a single "filled" row in the courtroom. I believe most if not all of the "supporters" Grubb refers to were nothing more than the nearly forty UNC-related defendants on the docket.
(Since I posted this criticism on Twitter/X, the article has been stealth edited to read "supporters and defendants")
Finally, I question if Grubb would have framed the story this way if it had been the N&O photographer in the courtroom being harassed?
It’s discrepancies like this between what I can observe with my own two eyes and what is reported in the mainstream media that lead me to pursue independent journalism.
Who is the NC Special Deputy Attorney General arrested for exposing himself?
Torrey Donnell Dixon, a 15-year employee of the North Carolina Department of Justice, is now on administrative leave from his position as Special Deputy Attorney General after being arrested by Raleigh Police last Saturday.
According to CBS17 sources, Dixon had been turned away from a fashion show cancer fundraiser at the Crabtree mall he was scheduled to participate in for being intoxicated.
Dixon faces two charges:
Indecent Exposure (Class 2 misdemeanor) for allegedly "expos[ing] his private parts" to "vehicular traffic" at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Blue Ridge Road
Intoxicated and Disruptive (Class 3 misdemeanor) for allegedly shouting "I'll beat the s** out of you, stop calling me n\****", according to court documents.
In addition to the NCDOJ, Dixon occupies another position of public trust as the vice chair of Raleigh's Human Relations Commission, where he is serving his third two-year term after being first appointed by the Raleigh City Council in 2020. The commission, under the city's Equity and Inclusion department, works to promote "promote human dignity, equal opportunity and harmony among Raleigh residents" as well as "diversity and human relations".
Dixon's education has been taxpayer subsidized; after obtaining his undergrad degree from Averett University and graduating from Duke with a JD and a Master of Theology in 2005, he had $170,000 in student loans forgiven after "ten years of civil rights work and public service for the most vulnerable Americans", for which he sent a personal letter of thanks to President Biden. (The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which Dixon was most likely referring to, was signed into law by George W. Bush in 2007).
Dixon's work prior to joining the NCDOJ included "achieving law to permit 16 and 17-year-olds to preregister for voting when they reach 18" at FairVote NC, and "work[ing] to achieve basic life services for impoverished minority communities in southern North Carolina who had been wrongly excluded, based upon race, from annexation by surrounding 'golf-richened' cities" at the UNC Law School Center for Civil Rights, according to his LinkedIn page.
Dixon is a Democrat activist, with his Instagram page showing that he was as a District Coordinator for the Southeast Raleigh Democrats in 2020; he also posted images with Democratic politicians he supports such as Congressman Deborah Ross, former Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court Cheri Beasely, and Raleigh City Councilwoman Stormie Forte.
Dixon has authored a book titled From Picket-Signs to Picking Presidents: A Grandson of the Civil Rights Movement's Assessment of the Democratic Party and Its Quest for Equal Rights, where he writes about "the legacy of gender discrimination, homophobic discrimination, and poverty in America" and "the failure of Democratic presidential agendas to pursue the goal of equality".
The City of Raleigh did not respond to my request for comment.
ICYMI: Justice for Baby Gunner #3
I've been writing about the case of Gunner Bliss, as I'm skeptical of the "Shaken Baby Syndrome" murder charge being brought against his father Noah in the Wake County courts.
In my latest article, I cover comparable cases, including a New York couple who won nearly a half-million dollars from the state after being falsely accused of fatally shaking their prematurely-born twin baby (as was the case with Baby Gunner):
INBOX
I'm sure many of y'all have seen pro-Palestine flags and banners hung over local interstates; a mutual on Twitter/X sent me the following photos after he encountered two Arab-looking men setting up Palestinian flags on the I-40 overpass at Old Reedy Creek Road near Umstead.
When he began taking these pictures, he says the two men "started to yell at [him] and run towards [him]". He returned half an hour later, and found that the flags had been removed.
Republican Wake school board candidate drops out, endorses Democrats
GOP-backed Wake school board candidate drops out. He’s now supporting the Democrat. - N&O
In a since-removed Facebook post, Wake County Board of Education District 4 candidate Robert Morales Vergara announced that he was dropping out of the race, blaming "hypocrisy and poor leadership" on the part of the Wake GOP:
A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with Karyn Mulligan about my candidacy, and I was surprised to see my picture recently appear on the Wake GOP website, apparently endorsing me. I want to set the record straight-this isn't a true reflection of what's happening behind the scenes.
I'm officially withdrawing from the Wake School Board race, but before I go, I want everyone to know the truth about the hypocrisy and poor leadership within the Wake GOP. They've made it clear through their actions that they don't truly support candidates like me, despite what they might show publicly.
It's important to me that the community knows what's really going on. I won't stay silent about this any longer. The truth deserves to be heard.
Archived from Facebook on August 29, 2024
Although the races are officially non-partisan, Morales Vergara identified as a Republican, ran as a Republican in the US House District 2 primary, and was running against a Democrat incumbent school board member.
In addition to dropping out of the race, Morales Vergara endorsed the incumbent Democrat, Toshiba Rice, as well as Democratic Congresswoman for District 2, Deborah Ross.
When I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Morales Vergara after a Wake County Republican Club meeting just says before this announcement, he told me that he was not a traditional Republican candidate, but have no indication that he planned to drop out of the race or change his party affiliation.
In response to these developments, Wake GOP Chair Karyn Mulligan addressed the situation in an email sent out yesterday, clarifying that Morales Vergara had never been official endorsed by the party, and putting the blame on him for not pursuing the proper process:
This past week one of our school board candidates decided to change his party affiliation and then endorsed Democrats, maligned several of our Republican candidates and friends, and disparaged a retired US Marine Colonel. We have been inundated with many questions, charged with many inaccuracies and been the subject of much misinformation. As a wise person has told me on many occasions, “clarity is never our enemy.” Indulge me as I clarify a few things.
The Wake GOP’s main goal is to recruit, develop, and endorse the best conservative candidates to bring our values back to every level of government. In 2024, the Executive Committee decided that Republican Candidates who won their primary do not require the official endorsement process. The voter’s voice has spoken and that alone has elevated them as the endorsed candidate. All candidates in non-partisan races will go through the following procedures:
Regardless of party affiliation, candidates in non-partisan races seeking endorsement must apply to the committee.
Once the application process is complete, the committee will hold an extensive interview with the candidate ensuring they are committed to upholding the ideals of the NC Republican Party Platform.
If the committee approves the candidate, they are recommended to the Executive Committee for a vote of official endorsement.
The endorsement of the Wake GOP provides the benefit of material and physical support for the candidate, most especially in the voter guides prepared for our get out the vote efforts. The CRDC committee held a candidate social in July and is still in the process of interviewing our non-partisan candidates. This committee is made of 8 volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds, some retired and some still in the workforce. I am deeply grateful for their continued work and commitment.
It has been reported by various news outlets and discussed on social media that Robert Vergara had received the Wake GOP endorsement. It is important to note that Mr. Vergara did not complete the process and failed to schedule an endorsement interview. Without official endorsements, he was campaigning independently of the party.
The Wake GOP has a listing of all Republican candidates on our website. If a candidate has requested an official endorsement, we have advertised these candidates through social media.
We have also been asked why Mr. Vergara was given a platform throughout the county at GOP events. There is a vast distinction between the Wake County Republican Party and various Republican Clubs in the county. There are federated clubs that are an arm of the National Republican Party and follow national and state by-laws. There are also clubs that are completely independent of the party and function outside of the GOP. These clubs are not bound to the Wake GOP Plan of Organization. They are self-governing and supported by their members. The Wake GOP did not give Mr. Vergara a platform.
