UNC encampment arrestees get dismissal agreements | Killer of UPS driver found insane

UNC pro-Palestine encampment arrestees receive pretrial depositions
More pro-Palestinian protesters take plea deals after UNC arrests. What the court ordered - N&O
Nine defendants who were arrested in relation to the "Triangle Gaza Solidarity Encampment" in April accepted agreements from District Attorney Jeff Nieman on Tuesday which will result in the charges against them being dismissed after probation and community service.
According to the News & Observer, six defendants who were charged second-degree trespassing received deferred prosecution, with their charges being dismissed if they complete 24 hours of community service and stay out of trouble while on probation.
Three other defendants facing more serious misdemeanors including assaulting and/or obstructing police received conditional discharges, with the judge ordering 36 hours of community service.
According to North Carolina law (NC GS § 15A-1341), the purpose of placing on probation via deferred prosecution or conditional discharge is to "allow[] the defendant to demonstrate his good conduct," and may only be granted by the court to defendants who have never previously been on probation. Although these two dispositions under the statute both result in the charges being dismissed, the difference is that conditional discharge requires the defendant to enter a guilty plea, while deferred prosecution does not.
I was able to find the corresponding court records for seven of the defendants who received these agreements this week:
UPS driver's killer found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
Man accused of killing Raleigh UPS driver in 2021 found not guilty by reason of insanity - ABC11
Man accused of murdering a UPS driver in Raleigh found not guilty by reason of insanity - CBS17
Man charged in fatal shooting of delivery driver found not guilty by insanity - WRAL
Stephen Bynem has been found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity for the 2021 murder of 23-year-old UPS driver Dylan Wall, who was ambushed and shot while delivering packages in South Raleigh near Bynem's home.
Bynem was committed to the Central Regional Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital in Butner, were he remain confined "probably for the rest of his life," according to Wake District Attorney Lorrin Freeman.
Under state law, to be released, Bynem would have to prove that he "no longer is dangerous to others", or that he "no longer has a mental illness". (Bynem's public defender says he is schizphrenic.)
Wall left behind a young son and a widow, who told ABC11 that "it does not feel like justice has been done."
ICYMI: Lee Co. Presbyterians petition local authorities to ban "lewd" and "unnatural" drag performances, "grooming children"
It may not be taking up as much room in the right-wing consciousness or news cycle as a year or two ago, but the "grooming" going on at "all-ages" drag brunches and drag queen story hours is still very much something that is happening in North Carolina.
However, without legislative action, even GOP-controlled municipalities and counties are unlikely to take action; what the pastor referenced in this article heard is that fear of legal action and the ensuing budgetary concern is what stood in the way of his county commissioners taking action:
The left doesn't seem to be constrained by such concerns (such as Carrboro suing Duke Energy over anthropogenic climate change, or sanctuary jurisdictions.) I would guess this is due to a few factors: larger higher budget jurisdictions tend to be left-leaning, the left has a stronger and better established "lawfare" establishment, and/or the existence of left-wing activist judges in the court system.
Insane. Meanwhile, in California a man shot up a Christian school full of children, grievously wounded two, and his justification was the Palestinian war. The U.S. government and State and local entities are playing with fire. History has proven time and time again that what starts as antiJewish hatred soon engulfs everything. We Jews may be the first to pay the price but all of society pays.
