Lee Roberts, who has been serving as interim chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill since January, was confirmed as the 13th Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by a vote of the UNC System Board of Governors on Friday.
Roberts, with a background as a finance, is a departure from the previous tradition of selecting the chancellor from the ranks of academia.
Roberts' selection marks a rebuke to the leftist capture of our educational institutions, an op-ed published on the day he took office as interim chancellor, signed by such organizations as March for Our Lives UNC and Carolina Young Democratic Socialists of America, criticized his lack of "commitment to equity" and Republican ties (Roberts served as state budget director under former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory).
Roberts attracted the support of Republican legislative leaders in his strong stance in enforcing the law against pro-Palestinian demonstrators who rioted after their encampment on university grounds was shut down by the police.
This is perhaps exemplified by Roberts leading police to raise the American flag after it had been replaced with a Palestinian flag by the demonstrators.
However, Roberts' show for the cameras was out shadowed by the defense of the American flag by the counter-protesting "frat bros".
As the timeline shows, the fraternity brothers only had the opportunity to defend the flag because Roberts and his escort retreated from the flag pole within half-an-hour of securing it to give a press conference, allowing the demonstrators to once again take the US flag down with no police resistance:
~2:30 pm
Interim Chancellor Roberts leads law enforcement officers to the flagpole, pushing through and clashing with the demonstrators as them attempt to forcefully keep them away, making use of the police's own barricades as well as improvised projectiles such as water bottles.~3:00 pm
Roberts and the group of law enforcement leave Polk Place once the flag has been restoredWhile Roberts takes a victory lap in front of the press with an impromptu press conference on the steps of South Building, demonstrators move back in and once again remove the American flag
This time, it's the counter-protesters who move in to protect the flag, primarily composed of "frat bros"

Will Roberts' leadership live up to the left's worse fears, or will it be as shallow as his media moment at Polk Place? Only time will tell...
PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED: Black Muslim man federally charged after posing with a handgun outside Raleigh mosque
25-year-old Michael Shawn Johnson aka "Abu Mikail III" was arrested by the Raleigh Police on June 29, 2024 and charged by the FBI after Johnson published an Instagram post showing himself in front of the Islamic Association of Raleigh (IAR) with a handgun.
According to the FBI affidavit, Johnson had been trespassed from the IAR several months prior in March after being caught taking photos and videos of children aged 6-9 at the location, and "attempt[ing] to call a handicapped child at the IAR away from their parents so the child could perform yoga with [him]".
Although Johnson deleted the photos and videos when confronted, he reportedly told the children "he would be back for them tomorrow". And, when the Raleigh Police arrived to trespass him and arrest him on an outstanding warrant, Johnson told the Security and Safety Chair for the IAR that he would be "coming back for [him]" as well.
On June 29, the Security Chair contacted the Raleigh Police and the FBI after seeing Johnson had posted the following images:
When law enforcement ran his information, they saw that Johnson was the subject of a domestic protective order out of Pennsylvania, under which he was ordered not to possess firearms. (According to the grand jury indictment on the federal case, the protectee under the order was Johnson's child).
Raleigh Police picked Johnson up near his apartment, and arrested him on two charges:
NC GS § 50B-4.1 (F), "Domestic Violence Protective Order Violation"
NC GS § 14‑269 (A1), "Carrying a Concealed Gun"
Johnson was charged federally under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(8), a statute which uses federal "interstate commerce" power to prohibit the possession of firearms by the subjects of domestic protective orders on the basis that his Springfield Armory XD .40 handgun was not manufactured in North Carolina.
