Socialists take credit for getting Raleigh pregnancy resource center "shut down"
Gateway Women's Care, Anti-Abortion Center in Raleigh, Shuts Doors After Picketing by Community Organizers - Durham Dispatch
Gateway Is Aborted! - Press Release (Triangle DSA Socialist Feminist Working Group)
As we have previously reported, the Triangle and the NC State youth chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America have been regularly protesting outside Gateway Women’s Care on Hillsborough St., as well pressuring the center's landlord, a Democrat, by targeting him with a petition, naming him on protest signs, and distributing fliers in his neighborhood
Although they appear to have no direct evidence that their activism was responsible, the socialists have taken credit for shutting down the clinic after discovering a public permit document for the property indicating that "the tenant...will no longer be occupying the space as of March 3, 2025."
The socialists also thank Siembra NC, the Triangle Tenant Union, and Raleigh Planning Commission member Reeves Peeler with assisting in their campaign to "identify Gateway’s points of vulnerability" and "shape our unique strategy of escalating pressure on their landlord."
The six remaining "crisis pregnancy centers" in the area are next in the crosshairs for "dismantling," according to the press release put out by the Triangle DSA.

Last minute plea for shoplifter who killed elderly Home Depot worker
Man pleads guilty in Hillsborough Home Depot employee's death - WRAL
Family of Home Depot worker shares father's message to man charged in his death after plea deal - ABC11
Terry McMillian, 39, has been sentenced to 8-11 years in prison after a last minute guilty plea while a jury deliberated on a charge of first degree (felony) murder over his killing of 82-year-old Gary Rasor at a Hillsborough Home Depot in October 2022.
As video shows, McMillian was attempting to walk out of the store with a cart with $837 of stolen Ryobi equipment when Rasor stepped out of his booth to confront the masked shoplifter; McMillian violently shoved Rasor out of the way, inflicting serious injuries which led to his death the next month.
McMillian's sentencing documents list 19 prior convictions, including 16 larceny related charges in Alamance, Durham, Guilford, Johnston, and Wake counties. McMillian received an sentence of 97-129 months with the aggravating factors of a crime committed while avoiding or preventing a lawful arrest, a crime against a very old victim, and a history of probation violation in the 10 years prior to the commission of the crime.
Rasor's family supported the plea deal, telling the court that their father "had such a forgiving quality -- our sincere hope, and my father's would be, that Mr. McMillian uses his time to rehabilitate so he can come out and be a productive citizen and reengage with his family and be a father he wants to be, that’s truly what we want."
Less than a decade for one's first murder plea is not necessarily an unusual sentence; in neighboring Durham County last month, Keon Rayquan Beal received only 7-10 years after pleading guilty to murdering a 19-year-old, a 15-year-old, and injuring four more victims between 12-17 when he shot up their vehicle in 2021.

Videos reveal what supervisor told NC trooper to do after fatal Raleigh crash - N&O
A state trooper and his supervisor are under investigation after a captured conversation instructing the trooper to conceal from Raleigh Police that he had attempted to pull over 31-year-old Tyrone Mason just before he fatally crashed while drunkenly speeding down Capital Boulevard in the middle of the night. (Mason had a blood alcohol level of at least 0.11, exceeding the state's 0.08 limit.)
However, recently released video shows that the coverup was unquestionably worse than the (non) crime, as North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Garret Macario was not even in sight of Mason when he crossed the opposite lane of traffic and crashed into an overpass.
Wake County DA Lorrin Freeman also announced this week that no charges would be pursued against North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Garret Macario and his supervisor Sergeant Matthew Morrison over the deception; however, the pair remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.
Mason's family is currently suing over his death, with a civil rights legal team including Ben Crump, known for inflaming racial tensions with his representation involving well-known incidents involving black individuals such as Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, and George Floyd. (Mason was black, while Macario and Morrison are white).
